1860 -- France: Émile Pouget lives.
Pouget gets an eight-year prison sentence for his participation with Louise Michel in unemployed activities when bakeries were plundered. Pouget also founded, February 24, 1889, "Le Père Peinard" (Lazy Father), one of the four most important French anarchiste papers in the period up to WWI. Author & signatory to the "Charte d’Amiens" (1906), endorsed by the CGT. Pouget wrote numerous books & pamphlets, including Direct Action (1910), Sabotage, & "Le Congrès syndicaliste d'Amiens", (1906 & since unpublished until 2006).

1863 -- US: Death of Lazarus, dog & faithful companion to Norton I, Emperor of the United States & Protector of Mexico, in October, exact day unknown.

1898 -- US: Fourteen killed, 25 wounded in violence resulting when Virden, Illinois mine owners attempt to break a labor strike by importing 200 nonunion black workers.
Repudiation of an agreement for the 8-hour day, a wage increase, abolishment of the company store & recognition of the United Mine Workers led to the "Virden Riot," when striking miners opposed the introduction of strikebreakers & armed guards. Ten miners & six guards were killed & about 30 persons wounded.
1902 -- US: Fourteen miners killed, 22 wounded by scabherders at Pana, Illinois.
1902 -- US: Ida Craddock is in court today on an obscenity charge. Found guilty of obscenity, the judge said her sex education pamphlet "The Wedding Night" was too obscene to show to the jury. On October 17th she slashed her wrists & turned on the gas, killing herself rather than returning to court for sentencing.
1903 -- Anton Chekhov completes work on The Cherry Orchard.

1913 -- Francisco Ferrer Memorial meeting held in New York City. Emma Goldman is one of the speakers. The memorial meetings have been held every year in Spain since his murder by the government.

1920 -- Italy: Armando Borghi, general secretary of the Unione Sindicale Italiana (USI) & militant anarchico, arrested in Milan by some order dating from July 20, but which had not been executed before.
Armando Borghi's arrest is meant to cripple the union, which represents some 300,000 workers.
Despite nationwide protests over 80 arrests occurred in Milan by the 17th, & even the veteran jailbird Errico Malatesta is nabbed.
1924 -- Anatole France dies at 80 in La Béchellerie, near Tours, three years after receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature. His funeral is the first national one accorded a writer since that of Victor Hugo in 1885.
