1860 -- France: Émile Pouget lives.
Pouget gets an eight-year prison sentence for his participation with Louise Michel in unemployed activities when bakeries were plundered. Pouget also founded, February 24, 1889, "Le Père Peinard" (Lazy Father), one of the four most important French anarchiste papers in the period up to WWI. Author & signatory to the "Charte d’Amiens" (1906), endorsed by the CGT. Pouget wrote numerous books & pamphlets, including Direct Action (1910), Sabotage, & "Le Congrès syndicaliste d'Amiens", (1906 & since unpublished until 2006).


1860 -- Source=Robert Braunwart China: 17,000 British & French troops capture Peking.

1863 -- US: Death of Lazarus, dog & faithful companion to Norton I, Emperor of the United States & Protector of Mexico, in October, exact day unknown.
Twain wrote to his editor, William Howells, suggesting that the Emperor would make a fine subject for a book. & a fit of writer's block removed itself & Twain was able to complete two novels: Huckleberry Finn which featured a lost Dauphin & The Prince & the Pauper, a story of confused identities.
Through these, he paid homage to the man he'd known.

Norton did not like being associated with these dogs — Bummer & Lazarus. They were hardly his "faithful companions." At most they were casual associates, &, more likely, they were inventions of his enemies.

WHEREAS, the First National Bank refused to honor a small check of $100, to pay the value of a model for a Railway Switch invented by us, thereby endangering our private personal interest to a large estate: AND, WHEREAS, it is publicly notorious that one or two of the Directors have large amounts in trust belonging to our personal estate; NOW, THEREFORE, we, Norton I, Emperor of the United States & Protector of Mexico, do hereby decree the confiscation to the State of all interest of said Bank as security for any losses we may sustain by reason of their acts.

1879 -- Jura Federation Congress is held. Kropotkin's anarchist communist ideas are being formulated & presented to the various Jurassic sections today. By the congress of 1880 these displace Bakunin's in the federation & eventually within the growing international movement.

1886 -- Norway: The anarkistiske author Hans Jæger, writing from prison during this month, describes his Munch picture "Hulda" in the first number of his periodical Impressionisten.

1896 -- Eugenio Montale lives, Genoa. Italian poet, prose writer, editor & translator who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1975.

1896 -- Emma Goldman, anarchist feministUS: Johann Most, German-American anarchist, & Emma Goldman's former mentor, denounces her at an event in New York when she solicits funds for the commemoration of the execution of theHaymarket Martyrs.

1898 -- US: Fourteen killed, 25 wounded in violence resulting when Virden, Illinois mine owners attempt to break a labor strike by importing 200 nonunion black workers.
Repudiation of an agreement for the 8-hour day, a wage increase, abolishment of the company store & recognition of the United Mine Workers led to the "Virden Riot," when striking miners opposed the introduction of strikebreakers & armed guards. Ten miners & six guards were killed & about 30 persons wounded.


1902 -- US: Fourteen miners killed, 22 wounded by scabherders at Pana, Illinois.


1902 -- US: Ida Craddock is in court today on an obscenity charge. Found guilty of obscenity, the judge said her sex education pamphlet "The Wedding Night" was too obscene to show to the jury. On October 17th she slashed her wrists & turned on the gas, killing herself rather than returning to court for sentencing.


1903 -- Anton Chekhov completes work on The Cherry Orchard.

1908 -- Ann Petry lives, Old Saybrook, Conn. Author of The Street & the juvenile work Harriet Tubman, Conductor of the Underground Railroad.


1911 -- US: Society of American Indians formed in Columbus, Ohio, beginning of Pan-Indianism.


1912 -- Alice Childress, lives, Charleston, South Carolina. African American playwright, novelist, & actress, known for her realistic stories about the enduring optimism of black Americans. Performs on & off Broadway with the Negro Theatre from 1941 to 1952, where her work was met with hostility, resistance, & critical acclaim. She also wrote the adolescent novel, A Hero Ain't Nothing But a Sandwich.


Francisco Ferrer, anarquista
1913 -- Francisco Ferrer Memorial meeting held in New York City. Emma Goldman is one of the speakers. The memorial meetings have been held every year in Spain since his murder by the government.
Ferrer is the Daily Bleed Saint, August 31.
"Francisco Ferrer pensait que nul n'est méchant volontairement et que tout le mal qui est dans le monde vient de l'ignorance. 1915 -- Edith Cavell, British nurse, executed by German firing squad, Brussels, Belgium.



Armando Borghi, Italian anarchist
1920 -- Italy: Armando Borghi, general secretary of the Unione Sindicale Italiana (USI) & militant anarchico, arrested in Milan by some order dating from July 20, but which had not been executed before.
Armando Borghi's arrest is meant to cripple the union, which represents some 300,000 workers.

Despite nationwide protests over 80 arrests occurred in Milan by the 17th, & even the veteran jailbird Errico Malatesta is nabbed.

1924 -- Anatole France dies at 80 in La Béchellerie, near Tours, three years after receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature. His funeral is the first national one accorded a writer since that of Victor Hugo in 1885.

The cheeky 22-year-old student pulled his pants down & pushed his butt against the window of the train as a parting farewell to the ticket inspector who threw him off for not having a ticket. Service for 23 trains were delayed for over an hour. We're thinking this kind of thing only happens once in a blue moon...




2009 -- Time To Go? Hello, I Must Be Going?: Edgar Allan Poe receives a funeral in Baltimore, Maryland, 160 years after his death. He was na looking so well, nevermore.
