1830 -- US: National Negro Convention, a group of 38 free African-Americans from eight states, meets in Philadelphia, Pa., with the express purpose of abolishing slavery & improving the social status of African-Americans. They elect Richard Allen president & agree to boycott slave-produced goods.

1870 -- France: Establishment of the Lyon Commune sparks the revolutionary upsurge throughout the Rhone valley, giving the impetus to the Marseilles & Paris Communes.

Upton Sinclair
1878 -- US: Birth of Upton Sinclair, Baltimore, Maryland. Novelist, muckraker & socialist. Winner of the 1942 Pulitzer Prize for the novel Dragon's Teeth. His best-known novel was The Jungle, an expose of the appalling & unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry.

Edmund Wilson, says: "Practically alone among the American writers of his generation, [Sinclair] put to the American public the fundamental questions raised by capitalism in such a way that they could not escape them."

1882 -- Leon Bonneff lives, in Gray (Haute-Saône), France. Proletarian writer. With his brother Maurice, wrote La vie tragique des travailleurs (1908), Les métiers qui tuent (1905), Aubervilliers, etc. They publish their investigations of the conditions of the workers & their lives in various newspapers of the left, such as "Guerre Sociale" & "l'Humanité".

1895 -- Italy: A successful protest movement leads to the amnesty of Luigi Molinari.

A military tribunal, on January 31, 1894, condemned Molinari to 23-years imprisonment for instigating an insurrection in Lunigiana, where anarchist bands armed themselves in support of the Sicilian victims of a "State of Siege" (a repressive attempt to put down revolts against increased flour prices).

1898 -- Brazil: Italian Polenice Mattei, Brazil's first anarchist martyr, assassinated in São Paulo. During this period more than a thousand workers are expelled on charges of being foreign agitators, & dozens die fighting with the police.

1914 -- Italy: 20-21 September, the Socialists condemn the militarist & interventist pushes. Among the voices strongly opposed to the militarism of WWI is that of the then Socialist Benito Mussolini.

His early woodsman & charcoal burner experience were background for his popular volumes of poetryKolarhistorier (1914, Charcoal Burner's Tales) & Kolvaktarens visor (1915, Charcoal Watcher's Songs), published in English as Charcoal Burner's Ballad & Other Poems in 1943.

1920 -- Russia: Russian Expedition stops in Odessa; advancement of Polish troops prevents them from traveling further.EG, anarchist feminist

In Odessa, Emma Goldman meets with local officials & again polls members of the Jewish community about their experience with & views about anti-Semitism. She meets the famous Jewish poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik. Attends a gathering of anarchists in Odessa.

Later in the month, on the way to Kiev, Alexander Berkman is robbed of a large amount of his & Emma's savings. The Expedition spends a few days in panic-stricken Kiev as residents brace for a potential attack by Polish forces.

    10,000 National Guardsmen mobilized, supplemented by 15,000 armed deputies, in an effort to stampede some 421,000 strikers back to work.

    1984 -- Songster Steve Goodman (1948-1984) can no longer fulfill a Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request.

    The Chicago folk ambassador, began performing at the famous Earl of Old Town in 1967. Songs include "City of New Orleans" (a minor hit for Arlo Guthrie), "Daley's Gone," "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request," & "Lincoln Park Pirates." He believed in traditional folk music. His songwriting ranged from blues to protest, & was characterized by fine melodies & clever lyrics.

    Many of his songs were recorded by his friend John Prine, as well as Joan Baez, Johnny Cash & others, which allowed him to survive as singer himself. Died of leukemia at the age of 36.
