1878 -- US: Birth of Upton Sinclair, Baltimore, Maryland. Novelist, muckraker & socialist. Winner of the 1942 Pulitzer Prize for the novel Dragon's Teeth. His best-known novel was The Jungle, an expose of the appalling & unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry.Edmund Wilson, says: "Practically alone among the American writers of his generation, [Sinclair] put to the American public the fundamental questions raised by capitalism in such a way that they could not escape them."

The Chicago folk ambassador, began performing at the famous Earl of Old Town in 1967. Songs include "City of New Orleans" (a minor hit for Arlo Guthrie), "Daley's Gone," "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request," & "Lincoln Park Pirates." He believed in traditional folk music. His songwriting ranged from blues to protest, & was characterized by fine melodies & clever lyrics.
Many of his songs were recorded by his friend John Prine, as well as Joan Baez, Johnny Cash & others, which allowed him to survive as singer himself. Died of leukemia at the age of 36.
