Daily Bleed Radical Literary History for August 28th

That is all the Walker thinks, as he walks throughout the night.
& that is what two hundred minds drowned in the darkness &
the silence of the night think, & that is also what I think.
Wonderful is the supreme wisdom of the jail that makes all think
the same thought. Marvelous is the providence of the law
that equalizes all, even, in mind & sentiment. Fallen is the
last barrier of privilege, the aristocracy of the intellect.
The democracy of reason has leveled all the two hundred minds
to the common surface of the same thought.
I, who have never killed, think like the murderer;
I, who have never stolen, reason like the thief...

Arturo Giovannitti, excerpt, The Walker, 1914

Ma, oo
Oooa
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners Saints
As I end this tale
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, & some taste
Use all your well learned qualities
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game...

"Goethe, certified public accountant of Weimar, could not understand that the manners of the peasant & the chivalrous etiquette of the aristocrat were only the devices of a truce with chaos — not social disorder, but the chaos before Time, over which the Spirit brooded.

My mother used to say, "A snob is a person who mimics the manners of the class above him."

Kenneth Rexroth, More Classics Revisited, page 89.

The metal workers had then already begun obstructionist tactics (ostrazionismo operaio) in the anarcho-syndicalist flagfactories, about Aug. 20, & at the close of August & during the first days of September that wonderful & hitherto unique phenomenon, the occupation of the factories by the workers began, a grim, determined, efficient & complete occupation, ready for armed defense, if necessary, & meanwhile carrying on the usual work in a competent way, as if capitalism had never existed.

1920 -- US Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Governor Cornwell requests federal troops to guard the mines of southern West Virginia. They arrive in Williamson the next day. In September rioting in Williamson follows attempts of local coal operators to import strikebreakers into the area.

1931 -- Italy: The government requires university teachers to take a Pledge of Allegiance to fascism. Why bother??!

http://www.polyarchy.org/basta/crimini/otto.html

1933 -- US: Filipino Labor Union leads 6,000 California lettuce workers out on strike, demanding 40-45 cents an hour, union recognition & improved working conditions.

Unity quickly dissolves when white strikers break away from the Filipinos & agree to arbitration. Facing the Filipinos alone, growers open a propaganda front, circulating stories claiming Communist infiltration of the union. Assisted by the highway patrol & armed vigilantes, they drive off 500 strikers.

The struggle comes to a head in late September, when vigilantes attack the camp of Filipino union president Rufo Canete. They burn the camp to the ground & force strikers to flee for their lives. The police then raid union headquarters in Salinas, arresting scores of strikers & their leaders. But the strikers hold out. The settlement gives them wages of 40 cents an hour & union recognition.

1936 -- anarquistas during Spanish RevolutionSpain: At Monte Pelado, near Huesca, Aragon, the Italian section of the Ascaso Column, headed by Mario Angeloni & the libertarians Carlo Rosselli, Camillo Berneri & Umberto Tommasini, repulse the attack by fascist forces. Angeloni & the anarchists Michele Centrone, Fosco Falaschi & Vincenzo Perrone are killed. After defeating the Nationalists, Berneri is sent to Barcelona to do propaganda work because of problems with his vision & hearing.

1955 -- US: While visiting family in Money, Mississippi, African-American teenager Emmett Till is brutally murdered after speaking "inappropriately" to a white woman.

The questionable trial that follows, & Mrs. Till's decision to display her son's mutilated remains during an open-casket funeral, help to mobilize opposition to segregation in America.

Probably the most important troubadour of the movement in the early 1960s was Bob Dylan, who had performed on sites where "black is the color & none is the number." Born in the same year as his fellow Midwesterner Till, Dylan was to transcribe his sense of horror in the Delta in an early song, "The Death of Emmett Till." Excerpt:

Some men they dragged him to a barn
& there they beat him up.
They said they had a reason,
but I can't remember what.
They tortured him & did some things
too evil to repeat.
They were screaming sounds inside the barn,
there was laughing sounds out on the street.

Then they rolled his body down a gulf
amidst a bloody red rain
& they threw him in the waters wide
to cease his screaming pain.
The reason that they killed him there,
& I'm sure it ain't no lie,
Was just for the fun of killin' him
& watch him slowly die.

King delivers his historic "I Have a Dream" speech, advocating racial harmony, at the Lincoln Memorial.

Organized to support sweeping civil rights measures. A highlight is Martin Luther King Jr.'s now famous speech, in which he declares:

"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Joan Baez, Odetta, Josh White, SNCC Freedom Singers, Peter, Paul & Mary, & Bob Dylan perform.

protesters
1968 -- US: Meanwhile, between Aug. 26 through 29, thousands of protesters gather in Grant & Lincoln parks to demonstrate against the Vietnam War. In addition to war protests, hippies objected to the 11 p.m. curfew, which prevented them from camping out in the park.

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books & pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

[chorus]...

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

Chorus:
& it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
& it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die!

1968 -- Meanwhile, the anarchist Yippie! Abbie Hoffman is arrested while having breakfast for having the word "Fuck" on his forehead.

Dave Dellinger, Bobby Seale, Rennie Davis, & Tom Hayden address 10,000 to 15,000 demonstrators at the bandshell in Grant Park, opposite the Hilton.

Dellinger announces that he will lead a march to the Amphitheatre. The march is stopped by police. Demonstrators are attacked by Officer Friendlies with friendly tear gas & friendly clubs at Balbo & Michigan & other locations in the area.

By most accounts, on Wednesday evening Chicago police (again infusing their reputations as "pigs" with meaning) take action against crowds of demonstrators without provocation.

The police beat some marchers unconscious & send at least 100 to emergency rooms while arresting 175.

Senile Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Mayor Daley tries to explain the police action at a press conference tomorrow.

Eighteen years later, when the Democrats next held a convention in Chicago, some police officers (sic) still on the force wear t-shirts proclaiming,

"We kicked your father's butt in '68
& now it's your turn."

In America we call this political change, progress, etc.

Since the 14th of this month nearly 15 free radio stations have been shut down by the government, but "the pink loggers (bûcherons roses) are proven impotent, as they are unable to chop down the libertarian ancient oak…"

Indeed, there is an immediate international outcry: demonstrations in Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Madrid, Montreal, & even Sidney.

5,000 people turn out for a Parisian demonstration & Radio Libertaire soon returns to the air, a new"Le Temps des Cerises."

Brecht portrait

& now they're off to the war
& they all need cartridges badly
& of course there are plenty of nice kind people
Who'll find them the cartridges gladly
"No ammunition, no war!
Leave that to us my sons!
You go to the front & fight
We'll make your munitions & guns."

And they made munitions in piles
And there wasn't a war to be found
And of course there were plenty of nice kind people
Who conjured one out of the ground
"Off you go, dear boy, to the front!
For they threaten your native sod
March, for your mothers & sisters,
For your King & for your God!"
