1421 -- Annihilation of Adamites, a millenialist, militant sect trying to establish god's kingdom on earth — where the chosen would never work & love would be free, in Bohemia.

Adamites called their church Paradise; condemned marriage & stripped naked while engaged in common worship. Similar groups appeared in Europe several times in later ages, & in Washington, DC (see below, 1967). In the 13th century they were revived in the Netherlands by the Brethren & Sisters of the Free Spirit, &, in the 14th by the Beghards in Germany. The Beghards became the Picards of Bohemia, took possession of an island in the river Nezarka, & practiced communism. Nearly exterminated in 1421. A brief revival took place in Bohemia after 1781 but these communistic Neo-Adamites were suppressed by force in 1849.

1835 -- US: Blasphemy? Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison narrowly escapes death after being attacked by a Boston mob infuriated by his pronouncement that "all men are created equal." Apparently white guys aren't made that way in Boston.


1837 -- US: That's White of You?: At Fort Payton, Florida, 75 Seminole chiefs are captured & imprisoned by US during peace talks under a flag of truce.

Osceola masterminded successful battles against five baffled US generals intent on stealing their lands & sending the Seminoles to the paradise of Oklahoma. He & other chiefs are taken prisoner when US troops falsely claim they wanted a truce to talk peace — still today one of the blackest marks in American military history.

By 1858 most of the Seminole (meaning "wild people" or "runaway") tribe were either killed, surrendered, or were moved to the West, but 200 to 300 remained hidden in the Florida swamps. Today, more than 2,000 Seminoles live on six reservations in Florida. There was never a peace treaty signed & the Seminole have always been an independent nation.

1865 -- George William Gordon, Jamaican national hero, wrongly arrested, sentenced to death.

1888 -- Nice Knockers?: Spiritualist Margaret Fox confesses spirit rappings were a put-on.



1894 -- French Guyana: Tonite a prison revolt breaks out in the French prison colony on the island of Saint-Joseph, organized by the quite large group of French anarchistes imprisoned there.

In September a guard killed the anarchist convict François Briens, & tonite the guard is killed in revenge & three others stabbed. The revolt was quickly put down, & on the 22nd 11 convicts are killed.

Initial plans may have included the famed burglar Clément Duval, but he did not directly take part in it. He did, however, jot down the names of the anarchists among the dead...

1904 -- Egypt: Isabelle Eberhardt dies in a flash flood in the desert at the age of 27. Swiss explorer & writer who lived & travelled extensively in North Africa dressed as man, using the name "Si Mahmoud Essadi." Daughter of the Armenian-born Alexandre Trophimowsky, an anarchist, ex-priest, & convert to Islam, Isabelle was an extremely liberated individual, rejecting conventional European morality in favor of her own path & that of Islam.

1909 -- US: In a Free Speech fight, Emma Goldman loses in the "City of Brotherly Love."

The police chief (not Frank Rizzo), another in a long line of Philadelphia zealots guarding human & civil rights, refuses to allow Emma Goldman to speak unless he can preview her speeches.

The Philadelphia judge rules police have the right to prevent both citizens & aliens from speaking if their words were deemed likely to cause a public disturbance.

The City of Brotherly Love is currently embroiled in attempting to prevent ensure the judicial murder of Mumia Abu-Jamal, sentenced to death for killing a policeman, despite lack of competent counsel, missing evidence, police threatening witnesses & changing stories, & an "appeals" judge who was the original prosecutor.

Many recall the 1985 police assault on a MOVE house in West Philadelphia, capped by a police bomb that ignited a blaze that took 11 lives & reduced 61 rowhouses to rubble.

Fortunately, by 1998 city police are reduced to harmlessly falsifying crime statistics so its citizens sleep more safe & sound.

This next week will be spent on the beach & on a range, firing 30 & 50 cal. machine guns & 37 & 40 mm cannon. The 50 fires around 600 shots a minute when it gets excited & has adjustments that can bring it down to a lackadaisical poop a second. The 37 mm throws a pretty good shell over a hundred times per minute. So there'll be a lot of pretty tracers to watch this week.

1920 -- Italy: About 25 delegates of the Unione Sindicale Italiana (USI, a syndicalist union 300,000 strong), meeting at Bologna, are all arrested in a body.

With the tide of fascism on the rise, this is part of a government crackdown against the union & numerous anarchist organizations & publications, resulting in the jailings of hundreds of activists. Among the jailed are Armando Borghi (General Secretary of the USI, his wife Virgilia d'Andrea, Errico Malatesta, & the editorial staff of newspaper Umanita Nova.

1920 -- Spain: Cenetista Ramón Jaume Mateu is attacked by "Pistoleros del Libre" (rightwing assassins supported by anti-labor business & the Catholic Church). Attacks such as these against militant workers are common during this period in Spain.

1921 -- Massive demonstrations all over Europe in support of the anarchists Sacco & Vanzetti. In Paris 10,000 police & 18,000 soldiers attempt to control the crowds.

'The prosecution left a trail' of doctored eyewitness accounts, altered testimony & false ballistics reports. That trail appears to exonerate the victims while convicting the executioners.

1929 -- Ursula Le Guin lives, Berkeley, California. Science fiction/fantasy novelist, anarchist, daughter of famed anthropologist Kroeber. Her books include The Dispossessed& The Left Hand of Darkness. One of the best modern science fiction & fantasy authors, a Grandmaster noted for her exemplary style & for her exploration of Taoist, anarchist, feminist, psychological & sociological themes.

Le Guin examines contemporary problems by recasting them in imagined worlds — for example, the possibility for a perfect anarchic society, in The Dispossessed, (1974); & life in an androgynous world, in The Left Hand of Darkness, (1969). She also wrote a wonderful fantasy series for children, the Earthsea trilogy, & has received many awards, including the Boston Globe-Hornbook Award for juvenile fiction (1968) & the National Book Award (1973) for the children's book The Farthest Shore. 1939 -- France: Serge Livrozet lives, Toulon. A French burglar sent to prison numerous times who became an anarchist & writer who, after meeting Biker Michel Foucault, formed the "Comités d'Action des Prisonniers." Livrozet wrote a dozen books involving the world of prison life. (Le sang à la tête; La rage des murs; L'outrage en plus, etc.)

1949 --  US: Ten top US Communists are sentenced to five years in jail for advocating the overthrow of the US government.



1949 -- Spain: The anarchist Miguel Garcia is arrested. Tried & sentenced to death along with eight other companions, five of whom were executed. Garcia spent 38 days in the condemned cell until his sentence was commuted to 30 years imprisonment.

Garcia was one of the survivors of the libertarian resistance which refused, either at the end of the Spanish Civil War, or World War Two, to give up the fight for freedom. Theirs was a rearguard action, attempting to defend the workers' movement against Franco's murderous repression.

1949 -- "EL CUBANO"

Spain: Julio Rodríguez, aka "El Cubano", a fighter with Catalan guerrilla groups, shot down in a clash with the fascist police in Barcelona.

Police also shoot down an unarmed Victor Espallargas & Jose Luis Barrao. October 1949 proved to be a tragic month for the urban action groups in Catalonia. Within a few days many of the comrades, & some of the most battle-hardened comrades at that, lost their lives. The list includes Luciano Alpuente (Enrique Madurga Herrero), José Sabaté (El Quico‘s older brother), Julio Rodríguez Fernández (El Cubano), Juan Serrano (aka Antonio García García), Arquímedes Serrano Ovejas, & Francisco Martínez Márquez. Many others are captured & subsequently executed, like José Pérez Pedrero (Tragapanes), Pedro Adrover Font (El Yayo), José Pons Argilés, Santiago Amir Gruañas & Ginés Urrea Piña.

Psychedelic face paint & flowers stuck in barrels of guns scare the shit out of US goblins & results in 647 arrested. 50,000 people demonstrate against the war in Washington, DC.

Radicals flex their muscles, exorcise evil spirits from the Pentagon, causing it to visibly levitate; redefines 'high rise'. Mammoth demonstration, where many ignore organizer's instructions, attempting to enter the building & confronting soldiers guarding it.

October 21-22: A demonstration at the Pentagon organized by the National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam (MOBE) draws 150,000. Afterwards, MOBE begins to talk about antiwar protests during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, where Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader President Johnson is expected to be nominated for a second term.

REMEMBERING JACK KEROUAC Writers are, in a way, very powerful indeed. They write the script for the reality film. Kerouac opened a million coffee bars & sold a million pairs of Levis to both sexes. We could write our own universes, & they would all be as real as a coffee bar or a pair of Levis or a prom in the Jazz Age. Writers could take over the reality studio. 1989 -- US: Buck Helm found alive after being buried for four days, in Frisco earthquake.

1992 -- Ante (or Anton) Ciliga, philosopher/Left Communist, anarchist sympathizer, dies. An early enthusiast of the Russian Revolution, Ciliga was quickly disillusioned.

Ciliga opposed the Bolsheviks during the suppression of Kronstadt & was sent to the Stalinist Gulag. With the outbreak of WWII, Ciliga was sent to Croatian prison camps where he managed to escape. He remained a militant activist to his last days, including the recent Balkan upheavals, while in his 90s. Ciliga is the author of Crise d'Etat dans la Yougoslavie de Tito (1974), L'insurrection de Cronstadt et la destinée de la révolution russe (1983), Où va-tu Europe.

        

The totalitarian bureaucracy is not "the last owning class in history" in the sense of Bruna Rizzi; it is only a substitute ruling class for the commodity economy. 2000 -- Netherlands: Second Anarchistische Boekenmarkt held in Utrecht. Inspired by the annual Anarchist Bookfair in London. Some 30 bookshops, activist groups, & presses participate, & the famed "The Ex" play in the ACU.


2006 -- England: 26th Anarchist Bookfair, London. The largest & most important regular gathering of anarchists in the world. 80 stalls through four rooms.

2010 -- Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas, who has has staged more than 20 hunger strikes, is awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament. Fariñas held a 135-day hunger strike earlier this year that left him near death but compelled the Cuban government to agree to release 52 political prisoners.

Another fast between 1995 & 1997 brought attention to his allegations of corruption at the hospital where he worked. A six-month hunger strike in 2006 failed to force the government to allow freer access to the internet. Reporters Without Borders awarded its cyber-freedom prize to Fariñas in 2006.
