1868 -- US: Bertha Landes first woman elected mayor of a major US city (Seattle, Washington), lives.
1878 -- Henry James spends an awkward afternoon with George Eliot & George Henry Lewes. As James leaves, Lewes, not realizing he is talking to the author of the volumes, thrusts a pair of blue bound volumes — the first edition of The Europeans — into his hands, saying, "Take them away, please, away!"

1897 -- US: The St. Louis House of Delegates passes a resolution supporting the mayor's prohibition of Emma Goldman's open-air meetings. Goldman's lectures — including "Revolution" & "Why I Am an Anarchist & Communist" — are held in private halls under police surveillance. In St. Louis, she began speaking to German & English-speaking audiences on the 16th while continuing to raise money for Alexander Berkman's prison fund.
1899 -- Guatemala: Miguel Angel Asturias lives, Guatemala City. Poet, novelist, diplomat, winner of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Participated in the 1920 uprising against Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Dictator Cabrera. When the always beneficent US overthrew the government in 1954 & installed their puppet Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Castillo Armas, Asturias lived in exile in Chile with poet Pablo Neruda.
His writings combine the mysticism of Maya with epic impulse toward social protest. His masterpiece, Hombres de maíz (1949; Men of Maize), depicts the seemingly irreversible poverty of the Indian peasant.

1910 -- France: Death of Luigi Lucheni, found hanging in his cell. Anarchist advocate of "propaganda by the deed," he killed the impératrice Elisabeth of Austria, (September 10, 1878) & got, at age 25, life in prison.
1913 -- Valev Uibopuu lives. Estonian scholar, short story writer, novelist & journalist, highly acclaimed exile writer during the years when Estonia was part of the Soviet Union.

1919 -- US: Red Scare? Reds beat White Sox, 5 games to 3 in 16th baseball World Series. This series is known as the Black Sox Scandal as seven White Sox are accused of throwing the series. Say it ain't so, Joe.

1920 -- Spain: Clash between cenetistas & pistoleros del Libre (rightwing gunmen) on the street of Riera Alta in Madrid. Cenetista Jaime Martínez Palau is arrested; also apprehended are Juan Lopez & Bartholomew LLabrés. The latter cenetistas are implicated in several "atentados" & end up spending six years in jail.

Though he remains best known for contributions to modern Chinese literature, he was also a master of the essay, a medium he made much use of toward the end of his life. His Zhongguo xiaoshuo shilüe ("Outline of Chinese Fiction") remains a standard.

1942 -- American crime fiction author, child protection consultant & advocate, attorney, Andrew Vachss lives. Married to attorney Alice Vachss, good friends with novelist Joe R. Lansdale. Author of Shella, The Getaway Man, Born Bad: Collected Stories, etc. He calls his hard-boiled novels "an attack with a blunt weapon," noting, "I wasn’t looking to create literature; I was looking to send dispatches from the front lines.”

1946 -- First exhibition of the work of Josef Nassy, an American citizen of Dutch-African-Jewish descent, is held in Brussels. The exhibit consists of 90 paintings & drawings rendered while in a Nazi-controlled internment camp during World War II.

1955 -- I was born in New York City on October 19, 1955. When I was about a year old, my family moved to Newark, New Jersey, where I spent my childhood. It was pretty uneventful until June 1, 1968, when I came home from a Little League game & found that my dad had suddenly abandoned my mom, my sister Lucy, & me. It was pretty traumatic, as you can imagine, but we all survived.

1956 -- US: 3 Secretaries & You're Out? Acy Lennon, a secretary to Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, is convicted of income tax evasion. A second Powell secretary, Hattie Freeman Dodson, was jailed in a similar charge in July 1956, & a third, William Hampton, still awaits trial.

The DOW index plummeting a record 508 points — 22.6% — after a record high of 2722.42 on 25 August & a 200 point drop by October, called a "correction" by most. Many analysts blame the federal budget deficit, rising interest rates, & the falling dollar. European, Japanese, & Canadian stock markets are also dramatically affected.

Not only was my luggage lost & I was trusting United Airlines to get it to the bar (& me) that evening, but the crowd didn't look like your usual Stale Urine fan club: mostly older, single men in their late 30s or early 40s. I was guessing that hard-rockin' '70s bands would be more their style, not experimental performance art industrial nerds.
